Monica Schnee

Monica Schnee passionately believes that being bilingual is an empowering gift. She learned "Spanish as a second language" while growing up in Argentina in an English-speaking home. In her current role as teacher/coordinator of a K-6 public school district in New Jersey, she teaches English learners and she coaches administrators, teachers and parents on the challenges and rewards of being bi-literate.

Monica's approach is to work side by side with parents to foster a love of literacy and language as well as to understand the demands placed on being an English learner. She created a Kindergarten ESL Program that has been recognized by the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE), as a Model Program for the State.

At present, she is working with the NJDOE and other early childhood professionals on developing a plan to systematically support preschool English learners and provide teachers/coaches with strategies to ensure that children develop their home language and English.

As an independent consultant, she has written curriculum for the NJDOE, provides professional development for ESL and general education teachers across the state and for her professional organization, New Jersey Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages/NJ Bilingual Educators (NJTESOL/NJBE). In her past role of PreK-K Special Interest Group Chair, she advocated for English learners in the primary grades through workshops and professional exchanges.

At the graduate level, she developed the syllabus and teaches the course on assessment for English learners at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey.

Monica's education and professional experience include TV Journalism, Simultaneous Interpreting/Translation and two graduate degrees in Education.
