Susan Zimmerman


Susan Zimmerman-Orozco specializes in working with her district's Students with Significant Interrupted Education (SIFE) program at the secondary level, and as a consultant, writes curriculum for SIFE programs in other districts. She is trained in SIOP and in creating unit plans for the International Baccalaureate Program. She has given frequent presentations on topics related to using WIDA Performance Definitions to improve academic achievement for ELLS, approaches to teaching reading and social studies to Students with Significant Interrupted Education and building outreach programs with Hispanic Parents. She has written articles about supporting English language learners for the ASCD publication; Educational Leadership and the NAESP Principal.

Her career in supporting English language learners has included teaching ELLs in Mexico and in the United States. While in Mexico she was an instructor and academic director at the binational center in Mexico City, Instituto Mexicano Norteamericano y de Relaciones Culturales, and as an instructor and department head at the Mexico State campus of the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterey. She also served as the president of MEXTESOL and has given presentations at regional and international TESOL Conferences.

In the Maryland-DC-Virginia area, Susan has taught ESOL in adult education, refugee services, and at local community colleges. For the last 15 years she has been employed by Montgomery County Public Schools, serving over 13,000 ELLS, as a ESOL teacher and as a professional development specialist. She co-authored a Maryland State Department of Education on-line PD course: Teaching English Language Learners in the Mainstream, one of the district's most popular Continuing Professional Education courses. She also served as an assistant principal in several elementary schools with high populations of ELLS .

Susan has a BA in English from Carnegie-Melon University, a MA in Theoretic Linguistics with certification in TESOL from the University of Pittsburgh and an MA from Hood College in Education Supervision and Administration. She has Maryland State Department of Education certifications in ESOL K-12, Early Education PreK-2; Secondary English and Supervision and Administration II.
